Natural Imagery in Emily Dickinsons Poem 666 - Literature Essay Samples

By looking at Emily Dickinson’s poem 666 â€Å"I cross till I am weary,† we can see the poet’s connections between the nature of life or spirituality and the subtleties of rhyme as well as meter; this link is important because it sets a tone for the reading of the poem. Dickinson’s natural imagery in this poem is important because it both defines and adds momentum to the narration. The rhyme scheme is staggered and alternates between true rhymes and slant rhymes. In many ways, the tone of the poem reads in much the same way we experience nature, with a lack of consistency and control. Poem 666 opens, â€Å"I cross till I am weary/ A Mountain- in my mind-† (1-2). The speaker seems to be struggling with something, pushing herself over this hurdle until she is exhausted at the end of the day. The term â€Å"Mountain† is capitalized placing emphasis on a great and possibly insurmountable obstacle. The speaker continues, â€Å"More Mountains- then a Sea-/ More Seas- And then/ A Desert- find-,† (3-5) again capitalizing the names of these vast entities of nature: Mountain, Sea, Desert. The poet seems to realize that no matter how many obstacles she overcomes in life, and no matter how large, there will always be more. The first stanza consists of five lines, as is common for a Dickinson poem, although the rest of the stanzas throughout the poem consist of only four lines forming quatrains. The only two rhymes found in this first stanza are â€Å"mind† and â€Å"find.† These are also the only two terms that are important in setting the t one of the poem that do not have the emphasis imparted by capitalization; however, by rhyming the two together, Dickinson gives them their own separate type of emphasis. The rhymed terms in the first stanza allow the reader to discover a second a theme apart from that of nature. The meter of seven, six, six, four, four sets up the rocky, challenging rhythm that continues throughout the rest of the poem. In the second stanza, the speaker claims â€Å"And my horizon blocks/ With steady- drifting- Grains/ Of unconjectured quantity- As Asiatic rains-† (6-9). She does not know what lies ahead of her because what she can imagine of her future is somewhat ‘blotted out’ by this unknown number of occurrences in the present. Dickinson continues on with this theme of traveling through nature and across the world by referring to â€Å"Asiatic rains.† The meter in this stanza is six, six, eight, and five, continuing the inconsistent rhythm of the poem. The two rhyming words used in this stanza are â€Å"Rains† and â€Å"Grains† which address the same image in varying ways and refer to the natural theme of the poem as opposed to the rhyming words from the first stanza, which referred to the more personal theme. Dickinson continues into the next stanza, â€Å"Nor this- defeat my Pace-† (10), saying that no matter how unsure she is of the future or how difficult life becomes she will not slow down or be diverted from her path: â€Å"It hinder from the West/ But as an enemy’s salute/ One hurrying to Rest† (11-13). She does not want to die until she can be at peace with her life. These three lines seem to shift the poem from simply the natural world into the spiritual world as she considers her final â€Å"rest.† This quatrain also allows the poem to be read in a different way, one that references a speaker who is constantly working and struggling and is, therefore, ready to move on from his or her mortal life. As a result of the connection between the natural and spiritual worlds in this particular stanza, the two rhyming words are â€Å"West† and â€Å"Rest,† with â€Å"West† indicating a part of the natural world and â€Å"Rest† symboli zing the spiritual. The meter is the same in the third quatrain as it is in the second. The fourth quatrain reads, â€Å"What merit had the Goal-/ Except there intervene/ Faint Doubt- and far Competitor-/ To jeopardize the Gain?† (14-17). Dickinson seems to be questioning why it is necessary to suffer. She wonders what the point in testing one’s faith is because it seems to only lead to doubt and conflict. As if the poem is acting as the further proof of this non-answer, this questioning stanza also lacks any true rhyme. It could be said that â€Å"intervene† and â€Å"Gain† are slant rhymes, but the ambiguity of the rhyme scheme in this stanza seems to act as a symbol of the ambiguity of life, death, suffering, etc. However, the meter still remains the same. Next the narrator proclaims, â€Å"At last- the Grace in sight-/ I shout unto my feet† (18-19). The speaker sees â€Å"Grace,† which could mean God, and she jumps to her feet to shout this like she has just caught sight of someone she has been waiting a very long time to see again: â€Å"I offer them the whole of Heaven/ the instant that we meet-† (20-21). If a reader thinks of this designated person as someone who is dying, it sounds a little backwards that the narrator says â€Å"I offer them.† However, it could be that, because she has her own beliefs and her own pieces of Heaven in the natural world, she is merely offering what she knows of Heaven as she enters the spiritual world. On the other hand, the poet could be speaking as if she has already died and she is ready to offer â€Å"the whole of Heaven† to her family and friends when they join her in death. True rhyme returns to this stanza with â€Å"feet† and â€Å"meet,† two w ords that seem to suggest a journey of some sort, keeping in theme with the rest of the quatrain. For example, Dickinson could be referencing the journey from the natural world to the spiritual world. The final stanza begins â€Å"They strive- and yet delay-† (22). The speaker seems to be referring to the human race as a whole as they continue to â€Å"strive† or struggle and work hard despite being continuously set back. â€Å"They perish- Do we die-† (23): with so many people failing to succeed and dying around her, it becomes apparent that she too might die very soon. Finally, with the statement â€Å"Or is this Death’s experiment-/ Reversed- in Victory?† (24-25) it is possible that the speaker is proposing that maybe the fact that people live as long as they do is itself the victory against Death. Again, this final quatrain is without a true rhyme, which is important because it is the end of the poem and it ends with another unanswered question, recalling the fourth stanza. Naturally, rhyme and meter can have a major effect on how the poem is read and how it is understood. These poetic techniques are able to affect the meaning of a work of poetry almost as much as the words themselves. Dickinson uses meter to influence the natural imagery that carries poem 666 to its final stanza while, at the same time, utilizing rhyme as a denotation of the shifts between the spiritual and the natural. The Emily Dickinson poem examined above, â€Å"I cross till I am weary,† exemplifies the importance of rhyme and meter when setting the tone of a poem.

This notion remains true within Albert Camus The Stranger and Hermann Hesses Siddhartha as the protagonists of each novel journey towards self-discovery. The protagonist in The Stranger has to come to terms with his life in order to reach the hour of consciousness. In Siddhartha, the protagonist must overcome the thirst for knowledge along his journey towards the hour of enlightenment. In both works, the protagonists of the novels are forced to struggle through various life-altering conflicts within society, nature, and themselves in order to reach the point at which they reach full understanding of the mean ing and purpose of their lives. Within both novels, the protagonists struggle against societal conventions as they try to make sense of their own lives. The Stranger portrays the protagonist Meursault as an outsider due to his unique outlook on life and inability to understand his society. As the novel opens, Meursault attends his mothers funeral, where he shows very little grief. Meursault is, in fact, annoyed by those around him who do show their grief and wishe didnt have to listen to anymore (Camus, The Stranger 10). While Meursault reacts to his mothers death in the way that is most natural to him, nonchalant indifference, it is not acceptable for society which demands some visible form of sadness. Towards the end of the novel, Meursault is put on trial for murder and meets with his lawyer where the two begin to discuss Meursaults mothers death. Meursault explains, he probably did love , but that didnt mean anything, all normal people wish their loved ones were dead (Camus, The Stranger 65). Within society it is normal for one to wish that a loved one does not suffer through a painful, life-threatening situation, however, Meursault instead wishes for his mothers death due to the annoyance she once posed. Although Meursault is being completely honest with his lawyer and is alluding to a common thought, he phrases it incorrectly and further alienates himself from society. Similarly, within Siddhartha, Siddhartha embarks on a journey of self discovery, away from the path of society. Siddhartha is unfulfilled living amongst the Brahmins and one day asks his fathers permission to join the travelling ascetics, the Samanas. His father refuses because the Samanas lead a life-style so different from the one society demands, however, he soon allows Siddhartha to leave after realizing that he already left him (Hesse 12). Siddharthas spiritual beliefs and desire to obtain enlightenment force him to alienate himself from society in order to achieve his goal. Years later, however, Siddhartha leaves the Samanas and travels to a nearby town where he works as a businessman under the merchant Kamaswami. Although Siddhartha leads a life among society, he still remains apart from it and holds on to his spiritual beliefs. Siddhartha play with the people around him, deriv amusement from them, but with his real nature he not there (Hesse 71). Meursault and Siddhartha also experience encounters with their environs which lead them to alter their views on life as well as discover the true nature of the world. Meursault experiences his first existential moment while at the beach as the suns brutal force causes him to awaken from a lifetime of living in the moment and realize the repercussions of his actions. Although Meursault realizes that killing the Arab will bring about numerous ill-fated consequences, he is unable to make a positive decision due his many years of going with the flow of life (Camus, The Stranger 58). Siddhartha brings himself closer to the hour of enlightenment by essentially learning how to find his inner Self by silencing all else. Through his time at the river, Siddhartha is able to continually learn, and it is in this manner that Siddhartha is able to move closer to his hour of enlightenment (Hesse 106). Meursault and Siddhartha reassess their lives thus far as they try to make sense of their beliefs and relationships. Meursault struggles to understand of all his thoughts and emotions which he previously saw no meaning in. Meursaults inability to determine whether or not he loves his mother and his feelings towards her death is reflective of his lack of understanding of his own emotions (Camus, The Stranger 65). The unattached manner in which Meursault treats his relationship with Marie, the woman he has been dating, also provides insight into his inability to have emotions towards another being. He admits that he probably dnt love her, however, is still willing to marry her because it dnt make any difference to (Camus, The Stranger 41). Fortunately, towards the end of the novel, Meursault is finally able to make sense of his life thus far and comes to the conclusion that despite his unengaged lifestyle, he ha been happy (Camus, The Stranger 123). Meursault realizes that life is a n ever-ending cycle and is therefore ready to live it all again (Camus, The Stranger 122). Despite Meursaults late epiphany, he is able to finally to take action and accept responsibility for his behavior. Meursault subsequently reaches his hour of consciousness. Likewise, Siddhartha reflects on his life and is able to see the value and purpose of each of his life experiences; he is able to reach his hour of enlightenment. Siddhartha is able to see the value in all of his life experiences by understanding that in order to truly find himself in his spiritual journey he has to seek the depths of life (Hesse 105). Despite the various paths Siddhartha has chosen on his journey to enlightenment, each has given him a better understanding of the nature of life. He realizes that with each person he becomes along his spiritual journey, he comes one step closer to enlightenment by obtaining the knowledge specific to each different person. As Siddhartha learns, the Buddha is essentially a part of everyone and his ability to discover his Self so many times allows him to finally reach his hour of enlightenment (Hesse 147-152). Throughout the novels The Stranger and Siddhartha, the protagonists are forced to come to terms with their innermost thoughts and emotions. Meursault has to deal with his mothers death, relationships with others, and own views on life in order to discover the purpose of his life. After reaching the end of his days, Meursault is finally able to take responsibility for his actions, make sense of his life, and reach the hour of consciousness. Siddhartha is forced to suffer through the thirst for knowledge as he strives to discover his true Self. Along the way, Siddhartha follows a variety of paths before realizing that they all lead to the same thing, to enlightenment. Siddhartha learns that, regardless of class or status, the Buddha is a part of everyone. It is this knowledge which allows Siddhartha to finally reach the hour of enlightenment. Although Meursault and Siddhartha differ in their lifestyles, they both are able to reach a full and final understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
