Elie Wiesel Essay Research Paper Elie Wiesel free essay sample

Elie Wiesel Essay, Research Paper Elie Wiesel # 8217 ; s statement, # 8230 ; to stay soundless and indifferent is the greatest wickedness of all # 8230 ; stands as a sum-up of his positions on life and serves as the driving force of his work. Wiesel is the writer of 36 plants covering with Hebraism, the Holocaust, and the moral duty of all people to contend hatred, racism and race murder. Born September 30, 1928, Eliezer Wiesel led a life representative of many Judaic kids. Turning up in a little small town in Romania, his universe revolved around household, spiritual survey, community and God. Yet his household, community and his guiltless religion were destroyed upon the exile of his small town in 1944. Arguably the most powerful and celebrated transition in Holocaust literature, his first book, Night, records the inclusive experience of the Hebrews: Never shall I bury that dark, the first dark in cantonment, which has turned my life into one long dark, seven times curst and seven times sealed. Never shall I bury that fume. Never shall I bury the small faces of the kids, whose organic structures I saw turned into garlands of fume beneath a soundless blue sky. Never shall I bury those fires which consumed my religion everlastingly. Never shall I bury that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all infinity, of the desire to populate. Never shall I bury those minutes which murdered my God and my psyche and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I bury these things, even if I am condemned to populate every bit long as God Himself. Never. And Wiesel has since dedicated his life to guaranting that none of us bury what happened to the Hebrews. Wiesel survived Auschwitz, Buna, Buchenwald and Gleiwitz. After the release of the cantonments in April 1945, Wiesel spent a few old ages in a Gallic orphanhood and in 1948 began to analyze in Paris at the Sorbonne. He became involved in journalistic work with the Gallic newspaper L # 8217 ; arche. He was acquainted with Nobel laureate Francois Mauriac, who finally influenced Wiesel to interrupt his vow of silence and write of his experience in the concentration cantonments, therefore get downing a life-time of service. Wiesel has since published over 30 books, earned the Nobel Peace Prize, been appointed to chair the President # 8217 ; s Commission on the Holocaust, awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement and more. Due to a fatal auto accident in New York in 1956, Wiesel spent a twelvemonth confined to a wheelchair while retrieving. It was during this twelvemonth that he made the determination to go a U.S. citizen and is still today an active figure within our society, every bit good as fulfilling his function in Judaic political relations around the universe. Wiesel # 8217 ; s occupation as president of the President # 8217 ; s Commission on the Holocaust was the planning of an American commemoration to the victims of the Holocaust.Wiesel writes that the ground for making the museum must include ; denying the Nazi # 8217 ; s a posthumous triumph, honouring the last want of victims to state, and protecting the hereafter of humanity from such evil repeating. Always keeping his dedicated belief that although all the victims of the Holocaust were non Judaic, all Hebrews were victims of the Holocaust, Wiesel advocated puting the major accent of the commemoration on the obliteration of the Jews, while still retrieving the slaying of other groups. Guided by the alone nature of the Holocaust and the moral duty to remember, the Commission decided to split and stress the museum into countries of commemoration, museum, instruction, research, memorialization and action to forestall return. In order to come to these determinations, a group of 57 members of the Commission and Advisory Board # 8212 ; including Senators, Rabbis, Christians, professors, Judgess, Congressmen, Priests, Hebrews, work forces and adult females # 8212 ; traveled to Eastern Europe, Denmark and Israel to survey Holocaust commemorations and graveyards and to run into with other public functionaries. The emotional hurting and committedness required by such a trip is singular, and Wiesel # 8217 ; s leading is undeniably notable. Wiesel remained president of the Committee until 1986. He has aided in the acknowledgment and recollection of Soviet Jews, the constitution of Israel and has dedicated the latter portion of his life to the informant of the second-generation and the critical demand that memory and action be carried on after the subsisters have all left us. Wiesel # 8217 ; s ain words are the best account: Let us retrieve, allow us retrieve the heroes of Warsaw, the sufferer of Treblinka, the kids of Auschwitz. They fought entirely, they suffered entirely, they lived entirely, but they did non decease entirely, for something in all of us died with them. Calculate Solubility of AgCl From Solubility Product

Calculate Solubility of AgCl From Solubility Product This example problem demonstrates how to determine the solubility of an ionic solid in water from a substances solubility product. Problem The solubility product of silver chloride (AgCl) is 1.6 x 10-10 at 25  °C.The solubility product of barium fluoride (BaF2) is 2 x 10-6 at 25  °C. Calculate the solubility of both compounds. Solutions The key to solving solubility problems is to properly set up your dissociation reactions and define solubility. Solubility is the amount of reagent that will be consumed to saturate the solution  or reach the equilibrium of the dissociation reaction. AgCl The dissociation reaction of AgCl in water is: AgCl (s) ↔ Ag (aq) Cl- (aq) For this reaction, each mole of AgCl that dissolves produces 1 mole of both Ag and Cl-. The solubility would then equal the concentration of either the Ag or Cl ions. solubility [Ag] [Cl-] To find these concentrations, remember this formula for solubility product: Ksp [A]c[B]d So, for the reaction AB ↔ cA dB: Ksp [Ag][Cl-] Since [Ag] [Cl-]: Ksp [Ag]2 1.6 x 10-10 [Ag] (1.6 x 10-10) ½ [Ag] 1.26 x 10-5 M solubility of AgCl [Ag] solubility of AgCl 1.26 x 10-5 M BaF2 The dissociation reaction of BaF2 in water is: BaF2 (s) ↔ Ba (aq) 2 F- (aq) The solubility is equal to the concentration of the Ba ions in solution. For every mole of Ba ions formed, 2 moles of F- ions are produced, therefore: [F-] 2 [Ba] Ksp [Ba][F-]2 Ksp [Ba](2[Ba])2 Ksp 4[Ba]3 2 x 10-6 4[Ba]3 [Ba]3  ¼(2 x 10-6) [Ba]3 5 x 10-7 [Ba] (5 x 10-7)1/3 [Ba] 7.94 x 10-3 M solubility of BaF2 [Ba] solubility of BaF2 7.94 x 10-3 M Answers The solubility of silver chloride, AgCl, is 1.26 x 10-5 M at 25  °C.The solubility of barium fluoride, BaF2, is 3.14 x 10-3 M at 25  °C.

World Religions Essay Example for Free

World Religions Essay The roles of women within the three major religious groups have changed throughout the years. Their beginnings; as-well-as, their current situation, have played an important part in how women are viewed within the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic communities. For this paper, I plan to examine what those roles were and how women in these faiths are now CEO’s, business owners, and important leaders within their respective communities. Roles of women within the Islamic faith vary from country-to-country. However, the roles of Islamic women are fairly standard and, in many countries, are open to interpretation based on how devoted they and their families are. The majority of Muslims live in more conservative countries, where women are required by law to be completely covered while in public or in the presence of men who are not family, or their husband. In these that require this of their women, those women are not allowed to work outside their homes. Their â€Å"job† is to maintain the household and tend to the children. In westernized countries, the burqua is seen as a symbol of repression for Islamic women. But for most of the women who live in the countries where it is required, they see the burqua as a means of protection for unwanted attention by the opposite sex. The â€Å"dress code† for these women have changed in ways that might not be apparent to the outsiders, but women now wear heels, brightly colored nail polish and other things that many westerners take for granted. Another change for conservative Muslim women, is the allowance of women to compete for their countries in athletic events such as the Olympics. They are still required to keep their legs covered, and are required to compete in their events wearing their head coverings and track suits. Conservative Muslim women are now allowed to walk around in public unaccompanied by a male, and they are slowing starting to enter the work force. Some Afghan women are even starting their own businesses outside their homes. In other Islamic countries where the laws concerning women aren’t as strict, women are attending public schools, universities, and raising up in the ranks of international corporations. The country of Jordan is one of these less strict countries. In an interview with Queen Noor al-Hussin of Jordan back in 1983, she states that Jordan was in the midst of a five-year development plan which emphasized the role of women in the development of a more modern Jordan. Islamic women all over the world have been given greater opportunities for education from primary up through the university levels. This increase in educational opportunities have led Islamic women to be able to serve in parliaments; such-as the Egyptian Parliament and even in the Egyptian cabinet. Islamic women has also been named director of national television stations, and even the Minister of Culture for Syria was a woman. It safe to say that Islamic countries, even those who are very traditional and conservative, are starting to realize that women are vital to their economy; as-well-as; vital to the needs of their own households. Within the next 20 years, Islamic women will no longer be forced to do anything they aren’t willing to do, nor suffer the harsh punishments that are dealt out when an Islamic woman wants to better herself. Furthermore, Islamic women in countries like Afghanistan, will continue to become heads of states, foreign dignitaries, business owners, and CEO’s, while maintaining their faith. Women’s roles within the Jewish communities have also changed. Women are and were, seen has being the heart of the home. Their role, according to Jewish law, was to be the primary vehicle of religious expression. Though for the most part, their role cannot be defined as simply that of mother, sister, or wife, but it assumes different forms as each women develops herself accordance with the general parameters of Jewish law and philosophy. Their roles have always been central and considered an asset to the Jewish communities, yet, they were limited and traditional and dominated their identities. In the more liberal synagogues, Jewish women now wear ritual garments and can read from the Torah, but at one time and even within the Orthodox Synagogues, women are forbidden to even hold a position of any meaningful leadership. However, a few years ago, a female was ordained as a Rabbi. This was a big step for Jewish women everywhere. It is now common in not only in a worship setting, but also, in a business setting for Jewish women; especially; women in the Orthodox Church, to hold jobs outside the home. Not long ago, Jewish women were not allowed to study the Torah, a right that was reserved for strictly the men. However, women are now starting their own Torah prayer groups which are being led by those same women. This, among other changes have caused heated debates within the Jewish world. In the future, not only will women in the more strict synagogues become leaders within their communities, but will also become future CEO’s, which currently, they are not allowed to do. One prime example is Gold Meir, the first Jewish Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. If a Jewish woman can become Prime Minister, imagine what they could do, we could even have a Jewish woman as President of the United States. I saved Christianity for last. Christian women have had their own issues within the business world; however; since Christianity isn’t as strict as some of the other religions on what they considered to be the â€Å"proper† roles for women, their entrance into the business world was a bit easier. The roles of women within Christianity have changed. At one point, like in other religions, women were expected to take care of the household, their husbands and children. Their education wasn’t up to the same standards as men, and were not allowed to discuss anything that was considered to be â€Å"mans† talk. Colleges and Universities were open to only men; whereas; women went off to â€Å"finishing† schools where they learned how to be a â€Å"proper† hostess, etc. Things started to change at the turn of the 20th century. Women started to become doctors, lawyers, and owned and operated their own businesses. They went to college and were determined to be educated the same as men were. Just recently the tide has shifted and there are almost as many women in the corporate world has men. Some of those women even holding places of authority. Women will always have a place in the business world, regardless of their religion. Hopefully, those women who decide to go against the grain and become more than their communities feel they are, will help other women see their potential. Women may be able to manage a household, but there isn’t much of a difference between fighting children and fighting co-workers. They will and are using their â€Å"homemaker† skills in the business world and in the future, will led to better businesses, less ethical issues and a higher economy.

Henrik Isbens A Dolls House Essay -- A Dolls House Essays

Ibsen's "A Doll's House" In Ibsen’s â€Å"A Doll’s House†, in Act Two Scene 6, Nora’s deceptive behaviour and desperation reaches its climax due to the arrival of the letter. This is because the letter contains the means she used to get hold of the money. During the time when the play took place, society frowned upon women asserting themselves. Women were supposed to play the role in which they supported their husbands, took care of their children and made sure that everything around the house was perfect. Work, politics and decisions were left to the males. Nora broke the law and decided to borrow money to pay for her husband’s treatment. She did not borrow the money in the ‘right’ way instead she forged her father’s signature. By doing this, she not only broke the law but also stepped away from the role society had placed on her, being totally dependent on her husband. In this scene, she faces the truth in the letter. The person from whom she borrowed the money, Krogstad, wants payment on the loan. He also blackmails her about influencing Helmer to give him a better job at the bank and hence increase his position in society. This causes Nora to try to keep the letter away from her husband; but what is the significance of the letter and what does it mean to Nora? Possibly, this letter catalyses how Nora acts and how she thinks and she has been deceiving Helmer for the whole of their marriage. This included all sorts of deceptions. One thing that a good audience can recogn...

“Poem” and “About this person” by Simon Armitage Essay

Two of Simon Armitage’s poems, ‘Poem’ and ‘About His Person’ are written about someone who has, for unspecified reasons, passed away or gone. One is in the style of a eulogy and looks back on the life of its persona, presenting contrasting views of it, while the other examines the articles found on a man after his death. Both give the readers some impression of the personas, but are somewhat ambiguous, inviting us to form our own mental pictures of the people and judge them for ourselves. The man in ‘Poem’ seems to have a split personality. Each of the first three stanzas is made up of four lines – the first three dealing with good things he did and the fourth mentioning a drawback, something bad. For example the third and fourth lines of the first stanza read, ‘And he always tucked his daughter up at night And slippered her the one time that she lied.’ Although there are more good than bad things mentioned, the bad is cleverly positioned at the end of the line and this seems to make it overshadow and even cancel out all of the positive actions mentioned. In the context of a eulogy the three positive lines could be what is being said with the last line representing the thoughts of those present at the funeral. Simon Armitage does not conclude on the life of this man, but finishes the poem with: ‘Here’s how they rated him when they lookef back; Sometimes he did this, sometimes he did that.’ This lack of conclusion and the continual juxtaposition of contrasting views of the man’s life do not form a judgement of him, but ask us, the readers, how it is possible to judge someone when he or she is gone. We form an impression of a man who seems dutiful (from his actions such as ‘for his mum he hired a private nurse), yet hot-tempered and domineering (such as ‘And once, for laughing, he punched her [his wife] in the face’), Armitage ends it with such ambiguity that we are forced to reconsider our judgements and  are left with only a vague impression of him. ‘About His Person’ presents its persona via his personal possessions only, which also makes it difficult to draw up an impression of him. However there are hints given about his life, such as ‘crowning one finger / a ring of white unweathered skin’ which suggests he may once have been married but died separated and lonely. It is also suggested by Armitage, however indirectly, that Armitage committed suicide, such as from ‘A final demand / in his own hand’. The poem contains metaphors for death – the library card ‘on its date of expiry’ and the watch, ‘stopped’. These suggest the pre planning of his death. Everything has a double meaning about the man’s life, which is an unusual but effective way of conveying information. From these pointers towards aspects of the persona’s life it is automatic for the readers to create an image of him. However so little information is given that the picture I see in my mind of an elderly widower with no next-of-kin deciding that he is tired of life is undoubtedly quite different to the picture drawn up by another reader. This is a difference between this poem and ‘Poem’ as we have even less of an idea about the dead man’s personality and even less basis on which to judge him. Yet the fact that we do is exactly what Simon Armitage is trying to illustrate – that human nature is to draw up impressions of people from almost no basis. Both of these poems are written from a detached, impersonal view which adds to their effect. This shows that the impressions created are from an uninvolved unbiased individual and that the people described could be anyone – even relatives of the reader. In conclusion, neither poem presents a detailed impression of the man who has departed this life. However through the ambiguous double-meanings, impersonal approach and cleverly thought-out structure they invite the readers to do the impression creation and so ask how we have done this and how we have managed to judge someone who is known to us only through a few lines of poetry.

Nature of Work

Marine Biology also refers to Biological Sciences or Biological Oceanography. Marine Science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. This particular field is probably the best known to the public. Marine Biology deals with the study of micro and living organisms such as plants, animals, viruses, and bacteria in oceans, estuaries, and other bodies of salt water. In the feild of Marine Biology you plan, participate in, and administer research programs for government experiment stations such as private research centers, manufactoring irms, and medical service industries. Tools and equipment for this career includes lab animals, X-Ray and other lab equipment, computers, spectrophotometers, collections of specimens, and a Starting no later than high school, a Marine Biologist should obtain a solid education in as many basic sciences as possible including chemistry, physics, and biology. Mathematics is essential. Plane geometry, trigonometry, solid geometry, and two years of algebra are recommended. Good English is no less important, for both written and oral reports are a big part of Marine Biology. The tudy of a foreign language, especially French, German, or Russian should begin early. Degrees in this study are offered only to college graduate students. Most entry level jobs minimally require a Bachelors degree in a natural science from an accredited college or university. Doctoral degree holders face competition for independent research positions. Those with a Bachelors degree or Masters degree in biological sciences can expect better opportunities for nonresearch In order to be a Marine Biologist or in any line of work, you have to be really dedicated to your job. This is the job I have always wanted ever since I was a little girl. I always loved the water especially the ocean. I think there is so much to discover about it and there are so many marine animals yet to be revealed. If I ever do become a Marine Biologist I either want to work in the laboratory or work in the field. I think it would be interesting to travel to different parts of oceans and discover what kind of plants and animals hide beneath the deep blue waters. Laboratory technicians and testers can acquire more education experience. They can work their way up through research ositions and may reach administrative posts in government or industry. As a rule, high paying postions of prestige go to those with a Ph. D degree and a history of successful research. C. Earnings and Working Conditions Marine Biologists may work in a laboratory, classroom, museum and industrial setting, a botanical garden or zoo, or in a field. They may either work alone or with engineers, technicians, and other scientists at various stages of research or product development. Working conditions vary with the kind of work they do. Indoor work areas may be quiet, well lighted, and air-conditioned. Those who work n laboratories or industrial settings must keep work areas very clean. Ventilation systems generally provide protection from dust, fumes, and odors. Special precautions are taken to protect those scientists who work with infectuous creatures or poisonous chemicals. While working in the field some Marine Biologists travel to coral reefs in tropical seas and ocean waters in cooler climates having to work a The earnings of a Marine Biologist are complicated. Most of these researchers recieve a salary directly from an employer. They write proposals in order to have their research ideas funded by private and overnment agencies. The quality of their results often determines whether they recieve money for future efforts, and consequently, whether they work and for how long. The salaries of a Marine Biologist comes down to each persons education, experience, and At the present time the profession of Marine Biology is one of the least crowded of the science fields. There are only a few thousand Marine Biologists in research, with less than three thousand graduates working and teaching in the United States. Since there is a limited number, opportunities in research are few and competition is stiff.

A Time to Kill essays

A Time to Kill essays We watched a the movie A Time to Kill by John Grisham in class. The movie takes place in a small southern Mississippi town. The town is divided up by their racial differences. The story of racial injustice all begins when two white men, drunk and high are joy riding in their old beat up pick up truck and spot a little black girl on her way back from the store. They attacked this ten-year old black girl beat her up, raped her, urinated all over her bloody body and then threw her over a bridge and left her for dead. The girl was Tanya Hailey, the daughter of Carl Lee Hailey. The two white men were later arrested at the town bar when one of Tanyas sneakers was found in the back of his pick up. While at the courthouse, on their way to being arraigned for their vicious crime, Carl Lee decided to take the law into his own hands. This main reason that I think that he did this was because after consulting with a lawyer he realized that those two men would receive light sentences for their crimes. This was a predominantly white community, which meant that most of the jury would also be white. Carl Lee hid in a closet until the time was right and then he killed the two men in a fit of rage in front of dozens of witnesses. Car Lee felt that the men deserved to die for torturing his little girl. While in jail, Carl Lee hires a white attorney named Jake Brigance. Jake is a young, bright lawyer that understands why Carl Lee committed the murders. Thorough out the trial Jake tries to get the jury t o see it thorough Carl Lees eyes. He made them think what they would have done if they were in his shoes. Jake is looking to find equal justice for Carl Lee in this racist community. Racism still flourished in the small Mississippi town because of the KKK was still active. Jake helped the jury make their decision by describing the crime in detail and then adding a twist at the end that made them thin ...
